Hey everyone, been ages since I posted here but rest assured I do frequently read everything.
Anyway, I got this new wireless network card off eBay and it seems to be working okay. The signal from a friends room was pretty bad though, so I decided to attach a cantenna. Being away from home, I was seriously short of any n-type plugs that could plug into the network card, and so I ended up cutting up the original D-link plastic antenna stub and attaching a length of coax directly to the exposed internals of the stub. The whole stub was then wrapped in aluminium foil.
The cantenna was a 5 minute job with whatever I could grab from the kitchen, and so it ended up being wayyyy too large (6 inches diameter). But I used it nevertheless in the hope that perhaps a miracle would occur, not that I had much to lose if it didnt work anyway.
The problem isn't about signal strength- the problem is that when I have this very badly constructed antenna plugged in, the computer randomly freezes on me (could be 5, 10, 15, 60 minutes after startup), and these are freezes which you can do absolutely nothing about except hold down the on button and force it to shut down. This problem doesn't occur when the "antenna" isn't plugged in though...
So how could this occur? I mean obviously the antenna isn't anywhere near in tune, and there are serious signal losses along the way, but how could this affect the computer in such a way?

Did you solder the coax onto the network card? I tried to pull a similar stunt and ended up fouling up the circuit board on my card. Whenever I plugged the card in, the computer would immediately freeze. I'm assuming its a similar problem and that your card now either has a loose connection or a short... It may even be getting a static shock from the antenna's configuration (might explain the irregularity).
