This is a beautie....... I have built a flyback driver ... one 2n3055 plus two resistors one FB coils and one primary coil

It works well on 5 LOPT, all different sizes

BUT I have blown 5 transistors now and they seem to blow AFTER I have left the driver disconnected from the 12volt battery ?????????

Twice, I have left the circuit over night, battery totally disconnected, and the 2n3055 have blown the next morning ... no start up spark at all

To day I have made another circuit up - worked great ... disconnected the battery .. went to do some work in the garage for 1hour - came back no sparks ... transistor blown

What is going on?

Stored energy I suppose ( thats how lopt work) so how do I prevent it?

Diodes in the battery line ? will that stop the chopping / pulsing ?

diode in the base line ... surely not?~:-(

Any body got a bulk supply of power transistors ;)
can I replace the 2n3055 with a mosfet irf 740 ?

Build a driver using a 555 timer and a FET (IRFP250/IRF540/IRF640 etc.). It is a bit more complicated but its performance is magnitudes better.

The single 2N3055 driver isn't too reliable, and very inefficient. Upgrade to a better driver. Using a mosfet would not work, that driver needs a transistor.
