Hi all.

Given how difficult (I tried) it is to get large area Lifter cells to work properly due to the tendency of the HV to (a) go where it is not wanted like down the balsa supports, or (b) all being dissipated in a small area of the cell rather than all along each side, I had an idea.

What about using a rotating corona wire arrangement, "Sauron's Eye" style? It seems ridiculously simple but it just might work by ensuring even ion distribution along every surface.

Possible method:- either use a single wire with a counterweight driven by Mr Pager Motor, or make a simple frame with "spokes" like a bicycle wheel using balsa and spin that from the base using a conducting wire (probably carbon fibre)

Also neatly avoids many of the problems of using ultra-fine wire including I2R losses (wire is a fraction of the original length) as well as allowing unusual Lifter geometries and perhaps even a double counter-rotating wire arrangement to cancel autorotation.

Feel free to comment.

Regards, -A

I would be concerned with the extra weight of motor(s).

The dual wired Coaxial configuration is a good Idea though and would be necessary to keep it from spinning.

Other than this, I am no expert on lifters, look forward to seeing the input on this thread!

You don't need motors to keep the wire spinning, you can easily make it into an ion motor
simply by adjusting direction of wire's tip.

But I don't believe any benefits of this would overweight the extra power loss supplying the ion motor.

You could make an ion powered propellor that adds a little lift by propelor action like a helicopter?

I think that would just be somewhat like building a rube goldberg machine... propeller could actually give as much lift as ion drive does alone.

All additional mechanisms would probably add so much weight that such a construction could never lift off.

For the proppeller idea, I'd say you could use the smallest wire you could find, Cause I have some 36 awg wire on the breakout point on my TC and it and the force from the wire spinning was enough to rotate the breakout point considerably.

Perhaps, but most planes cannot take off vertically. I think you could maginfy the lift using some sound aerodynamics. (probably not with a propellor, but a wing)
