Hey all, I came across a cap bank that's approx 30KJ @ 15KV for $1000. it's a stack of what looks to be 12 or 15 smaller AVX caps (Audiovox?) welded into a steel frame / cart. they're being sold as Energy Storage caps, is that synonymous with pulse discharge cap?
the only numbers I could get from the ad were 29870j, 15kv , $1000 obo.
So the question is two part: Is that a good price, and what would you all consider a good price per kilojoule on such caps normally?

Energy storage is not necessarily synonymous with pulse discharge. It might be, but then again it might not. If you're going to plunk down $1000 on it, I would try and get more pictures and detailed information, like a manufacturer and part number for the capacitors that make up the array. Then go and find a datasheet for them, or call the manufacturer.
The big garbage can sized pulse capacitors that people like Tesladownunder use to crush coins tend to sell for about $500 each surplus. So your joules per dollar seems OK, but only if the caps actually survive pulse discharges :(

They are Aerovox "Energy Discharge" not Energy Storage as I previously stated.
Thing about the ones the geekgroup has right now is that these are cheaper and local - and I have a big truck I can pick them up with. Ill get pics soon

Oh, "energy discharge" is what aerovox writes on their pulse discharge caps. You will need part numbers to know the exact specs for peak current, and voltage reversal figures (which can be very important for lifetime).

Nice find! Aerovox used to make some very nice high energy discharge caps. Can you tell of the capacitors are connected in parallel (i.e., are they each about 18 - 22 uF at 15 kV)? If so, they'll make a nice high current bank. If the rating is for all caps connected in series, then peak discharge current may be a problem especially if you plan to use them for high current discharge work (coin crushing, etc.). You really need to get the part number(s) if possible. Here was the prefixes for Aerovox's older HV cap models:
PX Heavy Duty Discharge (PX), 5 - 125 kV, Long Life Expectancy, High Energy Density for Heavy Duty Applications. Paper-oil-foil construction - very robust, highest pulsed current ratings.
SX High Density Energy Discharge (SX) - 10 - 60 kV, High Energy Density for Lighter Duty Applications
S20 High Voltage DC Filter (S20) - 7.5 - 100 kV, High Voltage Filtering in Power Supplies, X-Ray Equipment, Hard Tube Modulator, Transmitters and High Energy Particle Accelerators. Only very light non-oscillatory pulse duty.
PM Energy Discharge Capacitors (PM) - 11 - 66 kV, High Voltage up to 50 kJ (polymer film - paper)
KM Self-healing Kraft Metallized Electrode Discharge (KM) - 8 - 32 kV, High Energy Density for Government and University Applications
LM Self-healing metallized Electrode Discharge (LM) - using PVDF dielectric film for high energy density applications (mostly military weapons applications).
The Geek caps are also ideal for high energy pulse discharge work (or play)...
