Ok, so they are inverter transformers and I would agree that they are like flybacks.

Can't remeber where I pulled this from, but its pretty tiny. Works great off the usuall 555 circuit.

I was looking for a thread to see about finding a place to get old style flybacks, and found this, and thought I'd comment, even though this is kinda a dead thread, Self defenstates coil may have come from a fryed plasma globe I have a plasma globe I fried and it has that same exact coil in it..not sure if mine works or not mistrust

Here's the smallest one I've got. I've had it for a couple years and it still preforms very nicely. It's got a little voltage double built in to the top plastic part. It's about 1 1/4" x 3/4" x 3/8". I pulled it from an old B&W portable TV. It looks a lot smaller with the plastic top and bottom taken off but I didn't want to risk damaging it by taking off....
