So I went to pick up some caps today (198 uf/ 10KV) and while I was there the guy started asking me about some relays he had from the charging circuit for these...I was curious and took a look. i was expecting some kind of solenoid operated spark gap...but this one appears to be sealed in a glass tube with tungsten electrodes... He gave me a box w/ 4 of them. I've never seen this design before, and a cursory look through google and the forum didn't elicit any further information about them....

Anyone got a site with information about these? We were also wonder what they're worth. his guess was $50ish, my guess as a glass blower is $200-300, my EE father said something like $1000 if they were part of a government purchase...any of us close?

the guy said he's got like 30-40 of them, if anyone is interested.

Any info is greatly appreciated :) thanks in advance.

Yea definately Tungsten in that assembly. You can tell by the green glass which is Uranium glass, and the rose color in the glass-metal seal.

I've seen these a few times before but I don't know what kind of voltage level this one is good for. If I had to guess, I would say maybe 5Kv, but do some looking. Surplus Sales of Nebraska has some vacuum relays, so you might check that out. I think Jennings made HV relays too, but I can't remember the brands at the moment. This one is a SPDT, and there were other multiple contact switches out there too. I've seen some 4 contact vacuum relays at the swapmeet.
As far as price, I would check Surplus Sales.

Cool, mainly I needed the right search term for google :)

That helps a LOT

thanks

p.s. they are from a 10kv charging circuit. So anyways...surplussales has then in the $100-600 range. I'd guess these are in the lower end of that range.

if anyone else needs some lemme know, I can put you in contact with the seller.

Smaller second-hand Kilovac and Jennings vacuum relays often go on ebay for £20 (US $40) or so, so I would expect these to go for a bit more if buyers for such specialist parts could be found.

I don't know how many operations relays of this kind can endure before the vacuum starts to go "soft" - but sputtering of the contacts and out-gassing must limit their working life.

As you say, the new cost, especially when sold to a government department, could easily have been $1000 or more.
