it can be a pain on most point and shoots. Turning off the flash and turning up the brightness may help. but good control is something that you have to pay for...

Oh yeah, I use a Canon Powershot G2. It has a true "manual" mode as well as apature and time prioity, and several "auto" modes for point and shoot.
Any decently featured newer camer should offer at least some level of controll on the exsposure time - poke around in the settings or dig the manual out from under that pile beside your desk (you know the one)

Try and find a +EV or -EV button...
Fiddle around with the ISO, aperture, and exposure time.
I played around with my camera, adjusting the ISO, and the times remained the same for everything, and it seems like the only thing affected was the noise in the image. Adjustments on point and shoot digital cameras can be real hit or mis as to if they really do anything depending on the camera of course.
