When reading more complex datasheets or text documents, I like to print them out to read them and make notes in the margins etc. To save paper and space, I print out full duplex (on both sides of the paper) and two portrait oriented pages to a single landscape A4 sheet.
What I really want to be able to do is to order the pages so that I end up an A5 booklet that I can cut down the middle and staple together to form a conventional book. So for a 8 page PDF, I would want to print the pages in this order:
8 | 1 > 2 | 7 6 | 3 > 4 | 5
where '>' denotes moving to the other side of the sheet of paper '|' denotes the centre of a page
I can now cut the pages down the middle and it forms a book with the first page on the outside.
Is there a way of doing this? Prefereably automatically as manually setting up this would be a chore.

The Toshiba copiers (printers) I work on do that function. It is called "magazine sort". Probably moot as I am guessing what you are looking for is a way of doing it on your pc /printer. Rich

I used to have some Windows software which did exactly what you want. I forgot the name, probably it was something like "Print Studio", you should be able to find it with google...

If anyone still cares, they call it "impostion" Some MSWord related sources call it "booklet print" I've seen it referred to as N-up and 4n-up as well. Thought that might help, CutePDF (free) is supposed to do a good job although they *just* went to try-b4-buy. I'll bet you won't have to look hard to find an old link that works.
Some said the route to go was to get a printer driver instead. Here's HP's
I haven't had time to mess with it yet, hope it works out.
