Has anyone ever used a switching power supply for a Marx generator? I bought one of those 20-stage Chinese Marx generators. I had a collection of laptop PC switching power supply bricks so I thought I would use one of those rather than building a heavy linear transformer-based power supply. I picked one of the bricks that would supply the proper voltage and current, 18.5 volts at 3.5 amps.
Everything operated as expected for a while. After about 50 shots the power supply died. I am guessing that large voltage spikes must have been kicking back into it and killed it. I have concluded that using a switching power supply to power a Marx generator is a bad idea.
Has anyone ever used a laptop PC power supply brick or other switching power supply to power a Marx generator?
