When i edit video for time, so i dont have 16 minutes of real data, but only 2 minutes of interesting clips, what is considered the best practice in academia for editing with out being misleading?
Do i just put a black box with white text saying "Edit" briefly after each clip jump ?
i obviously keep all original unmodified video and pic resolution, but then duplicate and change for youtube, news media and others to view.

If you have one long take of an exercise, often the elapsed time might be relevant, as it indicates the number of tries, or learning progress, or flight duration. It may be a good idea to have a realtime display running in the corner of the video, which will then be obviously discontinuous across edits. You could even flash up '+2:30' (for example) for a couple of moments after each edit if you wanted to draw attention to the changed time.
You could make the edit self-indicating by choosing jump scenes that look significantly different, in brightness or position of fore/background, so that you clearly have nothing to hide. I feel uncomfortable watching interviews where the person's position dissolves to one just slightly different.
