I found a site with the title Million Volts o' fun...

In it rather than create one large million volt marx gen he creates two 500kV marx gens, one positive and one negative.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the whole thing. At first I thought equal charges went up each marx gen and collided at the output.

But now I am thinking the positive marx triggered by the high voltage switch goes up the positive marx, arcs over the distance between them and down the negative marx gen to hv ground.

Can anyone clarify what exactly is happening with the 2 marx towers in bipolar operation?

You have 2 towers +500kV and -500kV... there is an HV pulse of 1MV between the towers. Why 2 towers? .. smaller corona losses on electrodes, higher efficiency, BUT there is a problem tuning them to go synchronously. The problem is the capacitance of wires to connecting the towers themselves to at earth and the environment. The problem is the position of the tower itself + interconnection.

This is my Marx generator on my website: Link2
(1 classic tower and bipolar 2 towers)

The first attempt on the bipolar Marx generator, I didn't know how to do it, asynchronously working tower, doesn't to skip spark between the towers.

a second attempt, one higher tower, in another room. Higher tower for positive impulse.
electrode - positive (+270kV)
aluminum plate - negative (-165kV)
theoretically 435kV pulse, real truth less
why it worked so well now, I do not know, you need to experiment a lot. Now work both towers synchronously.

Not to forget! the positive pulse always jumps to a greater distance than a negative pulse. You have to ensure the dissemination of the positive electrode pulse every time. That's why I made a positive tip electrode and a negative plate this time.

and one tower:

So if everything is working correctly the negative marx gen arcs out towards the positive marx gen and the positive marx gen arcs out towards the negative simultaneously?

If that is the case shouldn't the first pulse, triggered by a high voltage relay switch go into both the positive and negative marx gens?

It doesn't appear that that is the case with the diagram the site I mentioned and yours have.

The positive marx has one extra capacitor which when the first spark gap breaks down due to a high voltage trigger relay switch, goes to the second stage of the positive marx gen.

The electricity from the first capacitor also feeds the first spark gap of the negative marx gen but that one does not have a high voltage relay switch. So how would the first spark gap on the negative marx gen fire?

Yes and no.. according to electrodes.. for better understanding see photos. There to see the direction of the streamer discharge...

the first photo, the direction of discharge from the positive electrode to the negative plate: Link2
the second photo, the direction of the discharge from both sides and you see where it joins: Link2
and a third photo, also a little bit weaker to see the direction of the streamers discharge and where it joins: Link2

in the latter case, the stem of an apple, such as a quasi electrode.. what does it mean? .. no matter how the electrodes, tip, plate, etc. are used. this has an impact on the direction of the streamers discharge

From my experiments I found that it is suffice/needed one ignition is needed for a positive tower to start the two towers at the same time and to burn all the spark gaps. You see this video as it works nicely synchroneously Link2 and one of spark gap trigger for the positive tower.. discharge spreads to both sides after burn first spark gap.
