Power supply simulator.

I've played around with both simulators, the Duncan Amps one, and LTSpice, and find I'm getting the best results with just a simple Pi type filter, two cap banks and a single choke, much the same as used on most tube/valve amp power supplies.

(I do get better results with some simulated notch filters too, but it's hit and miss, and in most simulations adds more harmonic distortion than it eliminates)

Using 47mF (yes, milli-Farads) on the input of the filter and around three times that on the output seems to give as good a result as most other variations, and a lot better than most, and with a 10mH choke, voltage stability with 5A current is around 1mV (around half that with 20mH).

I'm guessing voltage stability of 1mV under full load should at least do for starters, so I've decided to go with this setup. Next job is to assemble the capacitor banks, ten caps on the input and thirty on the output wink

Having just seen Patrick's thread relating to filter identification Link2 , I tried adding a cap across the choke on my 'Pi' filter simulation in LTSpice, and it improved voltage stability by a factor of 5.

The sim now predicts a voltage stability within 200uV at 5A.

I guess I should use non-polar caps? (272.35uF)

Update:-

I'm back to the basic Pi filter again.

I believe the LTSpice sim has become corrupted with all the changes.

I went back to the original file, modified it to the current revision, and obtained results consistent with what I posted previously for the Pi filter, but not consistent with what I posted recently regarding parallel resonant caps.

This is the latest sim wink
