Just some videos of a experiment I'm trying to create a solenoid from a arc discharge.

some time ago I was playing with h.v. and xenon flash tubes,
which it seems were filed to a pressure less than that required for minimum voltage on a Paschen curve,
i.e. arcs prefer a longer path to a short/straight one,
at least that was my interpretation, as at low d.c. currents, the arcs would curl into a helix.

So, if you use xenon at low pressure, you may be able to create a stable helical arc.

The higher voltage per distance, makes the path have a larger radius, that's what I'm working on, lest deflection by the higher voltage. From the magnetic, hence the high pressure.

Just trying a different idea, not sure what I hope to achieve.

The capacitor bank is about 71nF at about 50kv,89 joules, it's producing a lot of Rf detuned the radio in another room.
I'm wondering if it rings back and forward after the arc collapse weather it re arcs, might need larger coils for that and larger capacitor bank because of I=V/R*(1-2.718^C[tc]/L[tc])
Maybe, any one got some ideas to test along the same lines.

Take a look at the thesis I linked in this post: Link2

On page 114 (PDF viewer says 136) there is a picture of a plasma transformer they constructed and tested (plus some references to further info).

Thanks hydron, interesting part at the end about how much power it will take to sustain the arc.
I've got some thin Al wire and plan to give this ago, they said about 267joules per meter, twenty cm should be in the range.

At the moment the capacitor bank is 71nF with 140Mohm parrellel resistance, to increase it I'm going to have to increase the power supply.
I'll be buying a new NST 15kv 60mA,and increase the voltage multiple caps to 1.6nf,1.1nf,666pf, 666pf,500pf, the simulation says it will draw 15mA and charge the bank at 8mA,after one second it should reach 20kv.will replace the microwave diodes with run of the mill 1000volt 1amp,with 35 wired up and fibreglassed.
In the meantime will be building a rack for the bank, and sort out some bus bars. Will be looking around for a plastic see through pipe to seal the spark gap and a container for the thin wire.

This is a test of the compression, it must have been very low amps or a short pulse, the wires didn't move into the centre, or at all.
finally found a good source for capacitors, next five weeks will get some and see if it does something.
