I recently obtained (10 qty) 41kV @ 7.5uf monster caps surplussed by Lawrence Berkeley Labs (two of the caps not in the picture). Time for me to invest in HV gloves and maybe boots for protection. I read the 4hv archives, lots of good advise admonishing people to wear gloves and boots when around HV, but the 'lineman' gloves I see advertised on the web are rated well below 41kV. Question for those of you who have experience operating near the 41kV+ range... where did you buy your gloves and boots? Thanks in advance.

Stella's opinion: Not necessarily fatal, not fatal in every single case that is, but if you survive the Lichtenberg figures experience you'll be able to dine out on it for a year:

PS You will defo need ear defenders when those bad caps crack over.

Don't forget ear defenders and goggles.

Then there's arc-flash hazard
... natural fiber clothing, not synthetics which melt on to your body.

I have never worked on such high energy systems for hobby
(up to 6.3 kJ per cap is scary)
but I suggest that boots and gloves may give you a false sense of security.

I think that you may be better off using just goggles and ear defenders
and use a linesman's pole (chicken stick) to ensure everything is discharged before touching, rather than wearing gloves and boots that may give you a false sense of security, or cause you to develop bad habits.

I believe that you will need two pairs of gloves
electrically insulating next to skin
and tough over-gloves to protect the inner gloves from puncture, abrasion etc.
inflate the inner gloves before each use to check for pinholes etc.

It would be safer to just do not touch the high-voltage circuits. You don't need asbestos clothing to make a barbecue.

A lineman's pole is essentially a long insulated grounding stick to make sure a cap (or power line) is neutral?

I would advise ear plugs, face shielding and heavy cotton clothes. It doesn't matter how good your gloves are you shouldn't be within touching distance of those under power. At those energies its better to be protected from an accidental discharge and not to try to manipulate anything by hand.

We have a "space suit" at work for doing live work on switch gear (600v 10,000amp) stuff but the gloves and boots lose their safety rating after 6 months and are supposed to be sent in for testing. I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them.

You definitely need a crowbar circuit. They are lethal so take care. what do you plan to do with them.

Crowbar circuit + voltage detection circuit locking the door to the capacitor room. Charge controller outside.

No shortcuts!!!!
