Driving an RF Cavity With a Marx Generator

Just in case anyone else is interested in this kind of stuff, here's a link to a paper I recently came across describing an interesting design project which considers accelerating protons in an RF cavity driven directly by a Marx generator.

(The idea is similar to an idea of mine which I described here: Link2 ).

I didn't think Marx generators would be very suitable for directly driving an RF cavity, but I suppose it could work at a relatively low frequency if the size of the cavity isn't an issue.

Anyway, although the research paper is interesting it doesn't go into very much detail, IMO, so it leaves me with some questions such as:

(1) If you can design a cavity (Fo = 40 Mhz) which will give you 1 Mev of particle energy with a stored energy of 5.67 J (cavity "C2" in Table 3), then why would you need more than one cavity, if you're only after a final energy of 1 Mev? (IOW I would think that coupling in 6 J of energy from a Marx generator is not asking too much).

(2) Why would you need to worry about the Kilpatrick limit (and things like cavity Q) unless you're going to let the cavity ring for a while? (Maybe that's the idea, but they don't explain it).

I suppose I'll have to wait until they try to build it and publish another paper to see how it all works out.
