Ok, I had been running ubuntu for my desktop/server which worked great except for the fact that I couldn't suspend sessions in freenx.

So I switched to fedora tongue

But of course now I have a new set of problems (but far less than I had with ubuntu).

Mainly, only the root user can use sound. If you log in as a normal user it says that no sound cards are detected (running the soundcard detection program finds the card, and can play the sound). So I assume that there is a permission that I need to configure... Googling only turns up people with driver problems sad

Any suggestions?

BTW, if anyone has experience getting the current nvidia drivers (so that I can use twinview) to work, I am also working on that.

Try adding yourself to the audio group. As root:

gpasswd -a yourusername audio

I remember having the same issue when I was still using Fedora 2. Not sure if this is the complete solution though.

There isn't any groups called audio (or anything that might resemble audio) Should try and make one (although I will admit that that seems pretty far fetched...)

Any other ideas?

EDIT:
Well, I have no idea what happened... I was messing arround trying to istall some software (I was trying for vmware at the time) loggen in remotly with freenx. Suddenly it froze (I could move the mouse, but everything else was frozen) I tried killing some stuff through ssh, terminated the freenx session, and eventually rebooted. When it came back up it was in runlevel 3 (as normal, I haven't got the video drivers working right yet) and after a little while freenx was working again. But somehow or another I got sound :)

But I have a bigger problem now... typing 'init 5' into the terminal gives 'command not found' angry So... where did it go? So long as it knows to boot right into runlevel5 it works, and from level 5 I can go back down to 3, but not from 3 to 5 confused

Also, when trying to install vmware (bold is what I typed in)

vmware is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for this system. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command:
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl.

[root@dell peter]# /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl

In which directory do you want to install the mime type icons?

Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Player is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2849.fc6-i686/include

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6) does not match your
running kernel (version 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6xen). Even if the module were to
compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

I just updated (like 10 minutes ago) and I gave it the directory that it just made when it updated the kernel... I am assuming that the xen at the end refers to the xen virtualisation thing, which requires a patched kernel, but... Would it be possible to remove xen and then get back to the normal kernel that might compile? I would prefer to use vmware over xen since I alreay have it running fine on xp and I would rather not start fresh with xen... But then again I suppose that xen is supposed to be faster anyway wink
