Hello all!
I recently picked up a 150kV 50kW HF x-ray transformer from scrap yard. The transformer was in fully working condition and I opened it up to remove unneeded things like output smoothing capacitors (2x 6nF 75kVDC) and filament supplies. Now the unit is back together and tested working at low voltages.
Very first test before taking at apart. The primary was driven at 25kHz with half bridge igbt brick. Input voltage to half bridge was around 100VDC
How important is the vacuum degassing process and what level of vacuum will do it? The original tank will not hold together as vacuum chamber. Personally i think that once the oil is drawn into smallest cracks and voids it will never come out of there, at least not if the transformer is just lifted out of its oil bath.
Also the transformer appears to be diode split type, so the HV side is made from several, maybe 4 or 6 puck style windings and each of those have their own full bridge rectifier. For now i did leave the rectifier in as i was unsure if it can be removed and all windings connected in series (180deg out of phase and center tap grounded just like the current setup).
In case i manage to blow up the rectifier, can i just remove it or do i have to start looking for beefier diodes ?

That's beautiful corona, bright and wide. How long do you have to hold your breath ? I'm getting my super flyback up to 40kV and right away I can smell the ozone.

What are the wiggles on the bottom pic?
It does stink up the room pretty quick
Wiggles on the bottom pic are rectidier diodes, there are 4 to 6 pcbs like that stacked in series.
Apparently only minor under/overpressure treatment was enough :D
Now, the another question is, will this thing handle +10kVA?

That's one supremely terrifying transformer....
Burn some houses down with the x-ray death beam when you hook up the tube.
ah yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah lets take out some satellites ! We could pick one, then beam it on multiple orbits and days until the semiconductors don't work !

Terrifying is the right word here.. and the way its grounded makes it even more terrifying. The HV rectifier is center grounded and output is +-75kVDC related to the metal box which is tied to house ground. And the ground connection is absolutely necessary to make sure the HV feedthroughs share potential equally and to make sure there wont be over voltage event between HV coil and primary.

Thank you for sharing this take-apart, I once had to pass on exactly the same x-ray transformer, simply because it is huge, 50x50x50 cm and weighs around 100 kg :)
I do however have a smaller one that properly contain the same components as those you pulled out, a great recipe for me when I some day find the time to pull that one out from the dark.
