I think Patrick is asking how close do you have to bring the terminals for the initial arc to start. That is an approximate measure of voltage. Once an arc has started, the hot ionized air is much more conductive, which is what allows you to move the terminals apart.

7cm would be a crazy long distance for a LOPT to strike an arc. 1cm would be more typical.

Yes that’s about 1cm.

that's about 30 or so kV then.

Had a bit better luck since the first try running the same coil with the same LOPT, but replaced my homemade foil cap with this:

35kV 2000pF Cap Zps8ufux1xa

It should be 35kV 2000pF, but that’s an arbitrary value.
I’ll have to find what’s ideal the hard way, adding or removing strings of five capacitors.

I used tiny tubes for the same purpose. this layup type is nice. But it does require patience.

I'm not sure if your leads should be at the mid-point though. I don't do the ZVS thing.

Art, if you don't know of it, the Spanish firm HR Diemen is a great source of LOPT datasheets. The trick is to identify the model number on your LOPT amongst all the different numbers often printed all over them. Heaven knows what all these numbers are.

HR Diemen make replacement LOPTs so there are 'HR Diemen equivalents' for most current and slightly dated TV LOPTs and a lot can be learned from their data sheets. Pin configurations, output voltage and current, auto-transformer taps, diode splits, and all the secondaries used to provide HT to sub-systems around the tele: the more work they can get out of an LOPT, the more the designers like it.

Here is HR Diemen: Link2

PS: You did a good bit of work soldering those capacitors.

I’ve got some high hopes because I had good success today with a lot of things I know are off.
The primary is insulated at the moment so I can only tuned in steps with some taps I’ve made.
Also, the capacitor value is arbitrary. I could still have to add or remove caps to find an ideal value.
But having said that it’s the first night I got streamers to break out into the air from a torus, so I’m pretty stoked.

Here is six seconds.. It’s still pretty noisy to do late at night!!

The leads probably should be at the midpoint yes.
This isn’t copper, I had brass rod already, but I figured brass is close enough.
Thanks, I will see if mine can be identified. I have the second one for spare now.

Thanks :) At risk to my phone here’s a better one:

I think to get a single longer streamer I’d be wanting to put a pointed wire back on it. It seems to want to break out in a lot of places at once so energy is distributed amongst lots of points.
