Hi,

Some you may remember me as "Mr-Plazma crazy" or something along those lines. I always asked simple questions that I could have spent 5 minutes looking up on google, but instead bothered the good people of 4hv with these questions. Before I get into my topic, I want to apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused you. But anyway, the reason I have created this thread is because I am having issues with Steve's flyback driver.

I originally constructed the oscillator part of the driver earlier today (March 13th) And it works...Kinda. It powers up, there isn't any heating of the LM7812 or 555, But when i look on the o scope, I get a very disorderly waveform like that of interference. The 50K pot is VERY sensitive and turning it slightly changes the waveform from no voltage to almost 100% duty cycle. I am pretty sure this isn't normal, and I will attach pictures of my setup and waveforms below. I also get frequency between 200hz and 7khz. If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated as I am exited to see some fat white arcs :).

Edit: Yep, it was the scale. What an idiot I am Duuh. Well, thanks anyway. Sorry for the late reply, account issues. Also, i'm on vacation, but before I left, I build the gdt, but I can't reverse the waveform to find out the phasing. I'm using an OWON SDS6062 oscilloscope. So thats an issue along with each winding getting 9 volts and one getting 12. My hypothesis is that the magnet wire still has some insulation, as burning it with a lighter and sanding it seemed to help. Although the ringing isn't too bad, I will add some Zeners as I don't want to blow the FETS.

I was also wondering, what is the formula to calculate the max voltage for the IRFP260s, as I plan to run it at rectified mains using a variac, and I don't want to blow the FETS. So, should I use the 260s, or should I switch to something like a IRFP460?. Also, some circuits include schottky diodes in anti paralell with the Drain and source of the MOSFETS. I hear this is for protecting the MOSFETS, However I would like some clarification.

I apologize if this is trivial, however I am still a beginner. Thank you for your help :)

try a new pot... Or use his 555 interrupter from his sstc work..

Hmm.... I will try that when I get home, but it will be a few days, however what else could it be. I have already rebuilt it once and it does the same thing.

Check the oscilloscope scale and the trigger level. Check first the power supply voltage. Take out unneeded parts from the table. Verify the capacitor values and polarities. Post the schematic and show what you are measuring.
