By the way, you can melt paraffin and petrolatum (Vaseline) together in any ratio you want. At around 50:50 you get a substance that is less prone to shrinkage and cracking, and still a fantastic insulator. Maybe better, because it tends to soak in more and fill all the cracks.

I've used hot glue successfully before. The trick is to clean the area extremely well and to preheat the area to about 120F or so, so you get full adhesion and no air pockets.

The paraffin and petrolatum mix works very well too.

I made (16 years ago--bottle is dated) a batch of "Vaseline: Paraffin" @ 4:1 respectfully, to use as Vacuum Grease as suggested by a very old "Amateur Scientist" column from "Scientific American" --an issue from back in the day. Works great--NO deterioration, even today!

@Patrick: Do you mean you -store- it under oil?
I still have my 1st 50kV HV probe with the spiral resistor string stored in transformer oil and a top seal of plain paraffin...used a huge plastic drugstore Rx bottle, they seem to be top-notch insulators.
There has always been something about hot glue that bothers me!

@Sigurthr: maybe doing that with the hot glue?

EDIT:
There is a patent by TESLA Pat# 577,671 "MANUFACTURE OF ELECTRICAL CONDENSERS, COILS, AND SIMILAR DEVICES". That really get into how to 'wax insulate' these things. Back then (pat. date is: Feb. 23, 1897) the setup was complex--today it should be simple.

I made a little case, and for HV resistors I use a tube of one kind or another.

I just used a pair of pliers to remove the unwanted pins, you can also hot glue over the area if needed. Just make sure to remove any carbon tracks.

you really need to clean them. that maybe part of your problem. I presume you've desoldered them from that PCB board ?
