Can you arrange -four- flybacks in a sort of back-to-back usable configuration with some common primary windings between 'pairs' of xfmrs?

Hi everyone,

Have been experiencing some problems with fake IGBTs and multiple failures so this is on hold for the moment, but testing and construction should resume within the next few months. I just have to ensure I have genuine IGBTs and i will be redesigning the layout to be more professional.

Thanks for the advice so far. You can see my post about fake IGBTs in the general chatting section if you're curious

Hi paris,

Pretty much most sellers on ebay won't be selling genuine IGBTs. I bought mine from a seller who was based in China, though they could come from anywhere.

The non-genuine ones are much much cheaper, but their current and/or voltage ratings are lower. It's more worthwhile to invest in genuine components from places like element14 or Digikey.

Who knows, perhaps all of my ZVS problems have been caused by non-genuine IGBTs over the last few years!

I'd recommend checking all of the parts you get from china before using them. I just received 50 "genuine new" IGBTs from china and 7 so far are dead on arrival and many of them look to be rejects or fakes.

What is the intended use of the whole construction?

For arcs you may want to parallel them for more current.

Erlend, yes the flybacks are currently configured in parallel for a higher current output. A higher voltage by configuring them in series would be much more effective to get a bigger arc due to the bigger spark jumping distance, but the voltage stresses would be large, to engineer a safe system would be more complicated, risky etc

Just for arcing really. It's a wonderful pastime!

So far a friend of mine has bought some IRG7PH42U IBGTs from element14 (1200V 90A) and I intend to build a new circuit specifically for this triple flyback stack, especially with genuine trustworthy parts and not unreliable "fakes".

At the moment, this current ZVS is using some old IRFP250s which handle 36VDC in fine, but I'm not sure about 48V as I don't want blow my last pair of reliable transistors.
