On the whole I think it is good. I like the penguin logo, too. It is simple in the sense that it doesn't try to bend HTML to its will or use large flash animations to do things that aren't necessary.
If I were to improve it, I'd try to reduce some of the clutter. This would mostly involve a look at the spacing and sizing. In the main project table, perhaps the titles like "Pulse Energy" should be a little bigger. I'd also suggest a space between each section.
At the bottom of the list it isn't visually so easy to see how the links fit with their descriptions. It looks a little like a batch of text on the left and another on the right. Either spacing or considering the arrangement of the columns would fix this.
Readers will probably browse the projects list as they feel like it and easily miss the "About", et al, links at the bottom. Perhaps you could put these at the top.
I took a look at some of the pages. They're great! I'm going to have a full browse of your site later.
