ENCODER TO ARDUINO OUTPUT?

I FREQUENT 4HV BUT IN ANOTHER SECTION, BUT I SUPPOSE THIS IS THE RIGHT FORUM TO ASK. HOPPING YOU COMPUTER GUYS CAN HELP ME OUT.
MY QUESTION IS , WHICH TO USE AND WHY.


I HAVE 3 OPTIONS IN THIS ENCODER (.PDF ATTACHED)

1) TTL OUTPUT
2) RS422A LINE DRIVER
3) OL72725-26 VDC LINE DRIVER

IT WILL BE USED TO MEASURE ANGULAR ROTATION OF A CONTINOUS ROTATION "SERVO"
CONTROLLED BY AN ARDUINO MEGA 2560

Hi ben5017

I would use the TTl, the servo should be pumped with square wave, the rs332 won't register the individual bits(have party etc), The other I'm guessing is a ADC, and unless hacked won't be much use.

200 kHz response is fairly slow, but easy to track without using chip level hardware counters.
TTL is a discreet position sensor, and has more options for implementing control loops.

For example, some people only use one phase to figure out rotational velocity from the cycle period.

thanks guys TTl it is then.

RED: you mentioned it had slow response time. do you forsee any performance issues with my intended use

- will be attached to a shaft connected to a hobby servo. upon press of a button it will rotate the servo a set number of degrees. (360/13* to be exact). every time the button is pressed, It will stop the servo and hold the position once the once it travels the set number of degrees.I have never worked with encoders so I am not really sure what to expect.

if you need a link up to the kilometer range, and other peripherals which would be adressable etc.. the RS485 approach would be a nice thing
