I just gathered enough parts to start building my 2 stage coil gun and i was wondering were i position the led and phototransiter before the second stage? trigger circuit here
Should it be right before the second stage or slightly before to have time to turn on ?
If you are using a SCR you should use Barry's rlc calculator to check you pulse length is not longer then the time it takes for the pregectile to get to the centre of the coil

to late :( so far the projectile penetrates through an entire card board box when hit with a small hammer to give it a push so hopefully the first coil will be more efffective
I would put the gate right before the second coil and shorten the projectile a little bit - this way the difference in length will give the second coil some time to turn on and by the time current will rise to required level bullet will reach the point of maximum pull force - this should higher efficiency.

So I have been playing around with it and i am feeding the gate of the SCR ~7 volts when it requires only 1.5 i didn't know this was the output and now it only fires when feed a high voltage pulse. Is there anyway to have a higher current pulse at a lower voltage with that circuit and this hurt the SCR ?
