Techniques for bonding gold foil to glass

We are trying to avoid water base gelatin, adhesives that will leave surface residue like epoxies, or viscous fluids that prevent even layer adhesion.

I tried a thin layer of cyanoacrylate glue on a clean dry glass surface, but humidity in the air likely caused the porous surface of the thin gold foil to solidify the escaping gaseous form of the glue into a useless frosting.

Anyone have tips for a technique to bond this foil hygienically without losing the exposed conductive surface?

I've read about fusion techniques, but they involve high temperatures and, I think, a vacuum.

I assume you also need a 'special' glass.

These techniques are used in the manufacture of valves (vacuum tubes), etc.

I'll see if I can find any links later.

You should check, I think that gold foil adheres directly to flame-polished glass.

Where do you get/make gold foil? I need some gold foil to use it as target (source) in my sputtering experiments, since a gold coin will be prohibitively expensive for me.

Traditionally, some people just directly flame heat a clean slide with a SnO solution to form a temporary conductive layer.

Pure gold foils are available as eatable food grade 24k gold-leaf. It is the cheapest source if uniform thickness/quality is not a requirement. Typically, apparatus structure yields can be low due to the delicate nature of handling the foils.

although gold prices have increased massively,
gold foil is so thin that a little goes a long way Link2

UV bonding adhesive?

Also has the advantage that until you expose it to light it remains semi liquid, so if you see a tear or ripple it can be fixed.
