Cerium(III)-doped YAG (Ce:YAG or YAG:Ce) is a phosphor, or a scintillator when in pure single-crystal form, with wide range of uses. It emits yellow light when subjected to blue or ultraviolet light, or to x-ray light.[8] It is used in white light-emitting diodes, as a coating on a high-brightness blue InGaN diode, converting part of the blue light into yellow, which then appears as white.

It occurs to me that using a large area LED (broken presumably) as a source of YAG:Ce and then attaching this to the bare BPW34 or other large area photodiode might make a useful gamma sensor. Has anyone tried this because it seems feasible and not particularly expensive as dead diodes are very common in LED lighting circles.

Are you advocating pulverizing the LED to get the chemistry, or using it as it was built?
