Hi all, i'm hoping someone can help me out here with a bit of website help!

My host of many years left the business earlier this year and I had to move my Tesla Coil site to another hosting company. Since then i've been noticing some very strange behaviour.

Most notably I can't call up images or other files that i've uploaded into the public_html folder by typing them directly into IE's address bar. Eg:

Link2

...consistently gives me a "Forbidden, You don't have permission to access /arc10us.jpg on this server." message from home, work or trying to access from my mobile. But going to the page:

Link2

...displays the web page fine with the arc10us JPEG displayed perfectly in its place. Subsequent attempts to call up the file directly in IE then work, but I assume this is only because it's now cached locally?

This is very confusing and has got me stumped. It's also quite annoying since it's handy to be able to call up images or download files directly from my site from work, etc. Or include links to uploaded diagrams in forum posts for example.

I have a temp folder on my site in which I often place temporary files, images, schematics, WAV files etc, but find that whilst they're all visible using the host's uploading tool, only a small few of them are visible when surfing to that directory using IE. I've checked the file permissions and all files are set to 0644, and directories to 0755. There doesn't seem to be any pattern or logic to what works and what doesn't!

I'm new to all this, so if anyone has spotted any schoolboy errors or thinks they can explain what's going on, I'd love to hear it.

Cheers,

-Richie,

Sounds like your web hosting provider has some sort of thing in place to prevent deep linking. This is a common thing, for instance the 4hv web server won't allow you to link directly to an attachment that you've uploaded. I'd contact them and ask them to turn it off.

that, or you have access to .htaccess in your folder

if you read about .htaccess and its syntax (simple text file) you'll find that you can override or add such functionalities as security, file access rules, and so on...

example here : Link2

btw if you need tips please tell, its my job
