Hi guys, it's been a while since i last posted. My summer has basicly consisted of work, and then comeing home to work on some robotics projects for the FIRST competition next year. But i recently salvaged an old PC power supply from one of my computers (RIP server # 4) and i noticed that there are 2 200V 470uF capacitors and some transformers in there. I was originally going to turn it into a lab power supply but before i do i wanted to ask you guys. would those capacitors be good for a Coil launcher? I'm still quite a novice with electromagnetic particle accelerators so please forgive me if that was a stupid question.

They are good for making a first coil gun and for learning. You have about 20 J of energy and you can at most expect to have 10% efficiency, then you can figure out how fast your projectile will move with an optimal design.

The transistor looking things are transistors (98% sure) To tell what a given part is, type the numbers into the search box at alldatasheet.com and see what turns up.

For a heavy duty coil gun where does one get a robust enough SCR? I have a 50A rms/600A peak SCR ( 511-BTW69-1200 ) from Mouser. What if I wanted a peak surge of over 1000A or more?
