capacitors

Hi guys, it's been a while since i last posted. My summer has basicly consisted of work, and then comeing home to work on some robotics projects for the FIRST competition next year. But i recently salvaged an old PC power supply from one of my computers (RIP server # 4) and i noticed that there are 2 200V 470uF capacitors and some transformers in there. I was originally going to turn it into a lab power supply but before i do i wanted to ask you guys. would those capacitors be good for a Coil launcher? I'm still quite a novice with electromagnetic particle accelerators so please forgive me if that was a stupid question.

They are good for making a first coil gun and for learning. You have about 20 J of energy and you can at most expect to have 10% efficiency, then you can figure out how fast your projectile will move with an optimal design.

Thank you, guess i'll have to buy a lap supply after all cheesey

You can also find similar caps in practically all common electronics, eg TVs, laser printers, monitors, etc.

Hmmm, i think i have an old CRT lying in the basement, i should give that a try.

yea you should be able to find 1 or 2 lytics, around 220uf to 330uf at 400v

I also noticed a few transistor looking things. Is there a way of telling whether their a SCR?

The transistor looking things are transistors (98% sure) To tell what a given part is, type the numbers into the search box at alldatasheet.com and see what turns up.

If you need some scr's I would be happy to send you a few (free in us, or $5 global) pm me.

For a heavy duty coil gun where does one get a robust enough SCR? I have a 50A rms/600A peak SCR ( 511-BTW69-1200 ) from Mouser. What if I wanted a peak surge of over 1000A or more?

ebay?

I have a 50a stud with 1.5ka pulse rating.
its a 50ria120 or something like that.
i believe yours will do fine for a short pulse at 1ka.

I also got a few SKKT132/16Es 4.7ka pulse off ebay.

Don't serch for any specific value just price limit it in a decent range, say 20-90 and see what comes up.
Also dont forget to compare thyristors. thats what I ended up buying.

You can bridge them like that
Create
Cathode to Cathode , Anode to Anode and Gate to Gate... Bridge two or more of yours and you'll get more peak surge ;]
Greetz.
