Hi all.
Does anyone here have any experience with serial port to USB modules on PCs?
Having issues here getting them to stay on one port, also random dropouts where the pins won't toggle any more until a restart. They are both PL230x based.. Trying to use them to program 24Cxx e2proms, and other projects including a laser etcher. To simplify things I've also added an RGB LED on the direct outputs from the PL chip which confirmed the dropout problem. This happens on 7 and Vista.

yes, i use the pl2303 one as well, it is possible to crash the serial controller with noise on the pin (from a long open cable or from circuit). It's quite annoying and i don't know of any solutions other than restarting that particular usb device or unplugging and replugging, or restarting the OS.

I've had lots of issues with USB to serial converters before. Usually they don't fully implement the rs232 (at least I assume you mean rs232) spec e.g. some hardware flow controls pins non-functional. I've even found some that only have the RX and TX lines actually doing anything.
I've used them mainly for PIC programmers which use the flow control pins to set the PIC in different programming modes (read/write/erase etc) which due to the lack of full spec implementation only some work half of the time. Your problem might be due to something like that.

Yeah, maybe I need to do some proper work and put a low pass filter on the serial input. On the flip side, I came up with a variant of TOSlink that should work with HDMI allowing me to plug into my PC without a bulky and expensive cable. Uses multiple laser diodes as wavelength sensors and standard cheap LEDs as the emitters.
