after the prototype S.C.A.R. 1000, it is time to create version #2. attached is a quick pro-e of what i have in mind overall length approx 900mm. I will be getting the body laser cut out of 5mm plastic when design is adequate

Goals are to have highest muzzle velocity as possible using a decent size projectile (approx 12.5 mm diameter, 50-60mm length (powder matrix projectile))

switching will be IGBT, with photodiode gate triggering. (x5 300 joule accelorator stages)

I was thinking of having a sensor as close to the entrance and exit of the coil as possible. the coil would be the same langth as the projectile so when the second sensor is activated it closes the IGBT? or is the a way to achive this using only one sensor at the entrance?

possibly have a very high inducatace coils so that i can use one big cap band instead of 5 smaller ones. with the igbt pulse length sould be fairly easy to control with a potentiometer?

Imput and ideas welcome. What would you do?

Looks like a really cool deisgn, but did you finish the SCAR 1000? I really hope you did. So many people make long threads about the coilgun they're designing and so few actually finish building them.

I basically finished it but the charging circuit fried... I made a new one that charges in a fraction of the time. about 5 secs to 450 volts. it is on a big bread board and i havnt had time to miniturize it for use in the actual gun.

so by incorperating and adjusting an opamp it chandes the pulse length?

It's completely closed loop, so the pulse time is perfectly matched every time because of the sensor. If your projectile is the same length as the coil, it turns on right as the projectile enters the coil and switches off right as it reaches the center,

Also you'll want to use a comparator rather than an op-amp.
