Hey all,

I've a couple different anti virus suites at some point in time (AVG, Norton, McAffee). But who's making a good product these days? Who do you recommend?

I *only* want an anti virus, really. That is, I don't want a built in firewall, or spam blocker, or any of that crap. Really, I'm not going to loose any sleep if it's included in the software -- but I don't explicitly require any of the aforementioned services.

Who's your favorite? Express your bias!

Personally I don't use anything, neither does my family. We have found it to be more of a hindrance than a help. I used to use AVG but got rid of it because I still got a trojan and it wouldn't get rid of it. Since then I've gone without antivirus software and have had zero problems! Although I store all my really important files on an external drive just in case.

Also, I highly advise against using Norton. My mom used to have that and it crashed her computer. I inherited that computer since it was pretty much useless. I restored the hard drive several times to factory settings and wiped the free space in order to purge Norton. Right before the crash it used to take 30 - 45 minutes before it would open the internet. Now it takes about 30 seconds :)

I actually used to be a a sorta hacker when I did not tinker with HV, and I can say from experience, if you go download fake programs and series/cracks and stuff that like in the end you'll pick up a RAT it means Remote Access Tool, it is like the hacker is sitting at your computer, then can do anything use you computer to DDoS websites, open you CD ROM, anything really, and because Anti Viruses obviously knew that these programs (server is binded with fake program/photo or anything) and bad, hackers get around this by using a crypter, it jumbles up the code of the program to confuse the AntiV and let t get past, but there was always one ANti Virus we could never get past and it's what I use now, Avira, it's free and kicks ***.

Another vote for Avast, but as Platinum says, your behaviour, and that of others who use your PC, is just as important. The best security comes from switching to Mac or linux, as most malware won't touch either.

AVG or Kaspersky

Kaspersky seems to have better reviews, and has all of AVG's features but has no known issues with games or app incompatibilities.

I'd vote for Avira, as its free version is lightweight compared to some others and offers good protection.

But as said, the best way is to avoid getting viruses is not downloading files from suspicious sites without investigating first.

If you have G-Data in USA ?
I use G-Data, it´s the best in germany because many firms have G-Data for her protection.

Avast have spyware on board.
