Hello been dabbling with the idea of making a coilgun and have decided to make a serious attempt, I've got some 16 gauge wire for the coil, 2x 220uF and 1x 150 uF capacitors @ 400V and i'm sure i can make a charging circuit if i don't already have something suitable laying around.
So, my question for you is: How to do the switch?
With the capacitors in question i'd ideally get about 47 joules so, would a mechanical switch suffice? would i loose too much energy / fuse the contacts?
I've also considered something in the area of SCRs but i've not been able to salvage any ( I prefer to salvage components for my little projects since we don't have radioshack and ordering by mail costs 11 bucks in shipping)
