I have been thinking about it for very long time. Is there any profit for the "average" user (not a scientific laboratory - just a computer freak) by using modern computer hardware in a configuration like this and an easy way to "homebrew" it?

You could certainly make a few bucks off of a system <$5000 but, not nearly enough to pay it off. The best way to make money is through rendering CG stuff. You would need to contact and cold call 100's of people in very small businesses that need that type of service.

It used to take ~6 months for bitcoin farming to pay for its own hardware. Now that bitcoin has dropped so much in price, it'll take even longer. You _could_ theoretically profit, but it takes significant initial funds and is IMHO not worth your time.

I don't see any way for you to make money from a home-built computer cluster. Running Beowulf on a cluster (which could be fairly old low-spec machines) would be an interesting way to learn about parallel computing.
