Well as most people know MineCraft is a pretty simple game, it does not require very high specs. I have played minecraft on brother's computer and it works just fine. His computer is 2.8GHz single core, and 1gb of RAM. However, when i play it on my computer (3.39GHz dual core, 3gb of RAM), it crashes every time i play it after about 10 seconds. It is the typical error that says it has run out of memory.

I have reinstalled the game 3 times, i have restarted my computer each time and have tried it while having no programs running on my computer (other than AVG and Malwarebytes of course). Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with my computer to cause such a simple game not to work?

Oddly enough, simply changing the video setting from beautiful, or whatever word they used to fast made it stop crashing. It still lags a bit more than my brother's computer though, so i will try both of those suggestions and see what happens. Thanks alot!

dont use opengl and you should be fine... also view distance has its importance

do you play on a private server? I'm looking for a decent server to play on casually, and don't really like mods and freebuild, other than multiple homes mod and eastetically nice buildings

I did not buy the game, it is the free version. I would like to have the full version (playing online would be rather fun), but i haven't the money. Also, i love to use mods tongue With mods you can do/build things you couldn't otherwise, or at least not easily.

Well, i learned there is no free version, apparently it was a glitch that allowed me to get it for free 3 different times, according to some rather unkind people on a minecraft help IRC channel. So, i went ahead and bought it. Well, i am having the problem again, it crashes way too often.

So, what i have done to try to fix was update Java (it wasn't as updated as i thought!), and i tried to allocate more RAM. This didn't work for some reason, i cannot figure out how to do it. I watched many youtube videos telling you how to do it, which usually involves going into cmd and typing something along the lines of javaw -Xmx2048m -Xms1024m -jar "(minecrafts location)". When i tried this, my computer just beeped at me and cmd did not have anything to say about it. It is supposed to open minecraft after entering, but this obviously was not the case with me. I have 3gb so i was going to allocate 2gb, compared to the current (default) 490mb.

As i said in the other thread i have in computer science, i think i am just going to reload windows, perhaps it will fix this problem.

Running minecraft from command prompt to increase the ram it can use has always been a problem for me, I've only managed to get it to work with really specific versions of java installed, or by manually putting java into my system32 folder. Command prompt beeping at you could indicate it's a java related problem.

just using basic graphic settings won't let you run it?

that's a sad thing...

for it not to crash on my computer (4-core 3Ghz + 8Gb ram + radeon 4850 512Mb) I have to reduce graphic detail and viewing distance, disable opengl, and max out gfx fan speed... pretty intensive application when it has to render thousands of textured cubes and auto-generate world quite permanently

As you may have seen on a different thread about the win32 generic host failures, i can now not run minecraft on my computer at all since changing to windows 7. The problem i am having is that it says

"Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers."

I figured it was because of my video card, so i tried to get a new driver. I couldn't find the driver for windows 7, but i got it for vista and it said it installed. I didn't think it did, but i was checking for the driver in the wrong place. It seems i do indeed have a driver, and i checked to see if there where any updates for the drive and it said something along the lines of Windows has determined this driver to be up to date, so i am assuming it does indeed work.

Well, because of all of these problems, i decided to put minecraft on my laptop (windows xp). It ran fine for quite awhile, but a few minutes ago it stopped working. It gave me the exact same error message, yet all i did was delete the game's files and re-download them to get a new folder with the games info. I have done this many times in the past, and it worked fine afterward.

Well, after looking around on the internet i decided to go to the display properties and change the hardware acceleration setting from 7 to 3(i know nothing about what this does, but some youtube videos have suggested that it may help). This indeed made minecraft work on my laptop again, though the cursor was a bit glitchy.

I cannot seem to find this option on windows 7. I went to the display settings and clicked advanced settings, and went to troubleshoot (much like you do for XP), but i could not press the button to change the settings. Either way, this sounds like a temporary fix. However, does this perhaps shed some light on my problem? Does anyone have any idea how this can be fixed a more 'permanent' way, or what causes the problem? If not, is there a reason i can not press the button to change such settings? Here is a picture Link2
