Hey again,

I am currently building a 3 stage coilgun rifle. After winding the first stage and building the triggering system for the second and third stages i decided to test the setup. I threw it together and was firing it and the output went high even when firing at high speeds so i thought i was set to go, but WAIT!!! the switch isnt even on?!! Yeah, the thing was off and my SCR and triggering circuitry is still working, even after removing the battery it still worked shot after shot...anybody know whats going on here??

I can't tell based on your description. Can you post a couple photographs and a good schematic?

One technique for figuring out if first-stage firing noise is accidentally triggering subsequent stages, is to hold the firing tube vertically and drop the projectile down the barrel.

Cheers, Barry

Maybe your injector coil isn't on, but power to your triggers is?

Depends on how do you charge your caps the accelerator stages will charge as well as the injection stage.

As Barry said, a schem would help though ;)

Here's what i'm trying to say...all of my electronics work without any power to them...my SCR triggers with no gate current, and the output of my comparator goes high...with no battery attached, there is absolutely nothing connected to my circuit (except charging circuitry which is completely separate) and it still all works....

W-w-what?

Omg. Maybe the magical smoke evolved into some sort of soul O.o

Joking, but it would help if you'd post your schems, so we can see if there's any power coming from any capacitor or something on the boards.

maybe is dv/dt triggering your scr if your cap bank is charged.

I still can't say anything about anything, until you provide some circuit details. Please come back when you have a schematic and photos and details of what you tried, what you expected, and what you actually got.

How to ask smart questions.

K thx! Barry

Triggering Circuitry - you have to click on "Projectile Detection"

I'd upload pictures, but the only camera I have takes jpeg pics, which are not allowed.

It's hooked up the way it should be, and the triggering current for the SCR comes from the supply rails of the triggering circuitry.

Dunno, I have the exact same design, but adapted to an LM211 and it triggers properly, works only when power is applied and so on.

Maybe the caps on the voltage regulators are very big and they keep feeding the circuit even when power has been cut off?

Also, images need to be uploaded to an external server such as ImageShack, Photobucket, and so on.
