Right, this computer's motherboard has two SDRAM banks, which used to have a 64MB module and a 128MB module, giving 196MB.

Now I just got a good deal on a 256MB SDRAM module, so I replaced the 64MB, expecting to double the RAM.

For some reason the BIOS and Win2000 both only think there's just over 256MB now.

What's going on?

What motherboard/BIOS are you running. Is it quite old? (Relatively)
Could be a limitation in the boards design or the BIOS.

Some chipsets are fussy with mixing single and double sided memory. Do you have a mixture of single/double sided now?

A particular Intel chipset (forgot which one) used to be very bad for this.

There is usually a table in the manual that tells what kind of module works in what slot when combined with different modules. If I don't have the manual I just try all possible combinations. It is not uncommon to find out that the two largest modules you got does not work together in a motherboard.

In general,
1.) Try inserting one piece of ram at a time.
2.) Boot until system probe and POST is done
3.) Shut down
4.) Insert next piece of memory

Tips:
* Insert modules starting with the largest sized one in ram slot 1. (Then try the same thing starting with the smallest in slot one if it does not work.)
* Mixed speed memory can cause headaches.
* Not all ram works with every system or at the ideal speed.

Cheers,
smile

hey, if it's dusty, why dont' you try and clean the slot and the gold contacts on the ram.
then go into bios, and make it do the memory test.(disable quick POST)

Thanks everyone!

I can get another module from the same source and see if they work together.

I am almost sure that it is that you are mixing sizes. I just had that problem yesterday... I was hoping to try an ubuntu lave disk on an old junker box to see if it would handle being a backup something (which it did after downgrading the graphics card from a 10 year old on to an 11 year old one, even the sound card was supported amazed ). I had a 128 stick and a 256 stick, so the bios read up the to top of the 128 stick and ignored the rest of it... That also caused major problems with the ubuntu disk, causing to to hang on the initial startup. But dropping it back to 128+128 caused it to run fine. I also tried with just the 256 one and all I got was beeping on startup angry

Some brand-name PCs (Dell, IBM, etc.) will only work with RAM designed specifically fior that make/model.

I had 64MB + 128MB before which proves it can work but with this sort of thing you have to put aside crisp ideas of silicon and accept that there really are little demons inside making it all work. mistrust

It'll be a few days before I get hold of another RAM module.
