I've tracked a few problems like this down to power supplies and the voltage regulators on the motherboard. Look around on the board at the electrolytic capacitors. For a while there was a huge rash of bad caps and I'd see boards that had 10-20 caps bulging at the top and leaking all over the board. Capacitors are usually the culprit in power supplies too but you can't see them as easily.

If you change them, maybe the old motherboard will live again. Doesn't matter a lot considering you already bought one, but as an exercise.
Nope, it's already gone into the scrap board recycling at work. As part of my 12 step program to stop hoarding "stuff" (Hello, my name is Joe), I threw it out as soon as the new one fired up. Well, OK, I did retain the small heatsink from the north/south? bridge, it might be handy if ... no, no, no !
