An update on the Navy's ongoing work toward putting railguns on its warships.

Pics or it didn't happen! ;)

I scrolled down looking for a video as soon as I clicked the link before succumbing to actually reading the text...
Still wish they'd included more specifications. Mach 5 is great, but how does the damage it causes compare to a guided explosive? And how big is the darn thing? And most importantly... where's the video? cry

A longer video showing different parts of the gun, including the capacitor bank (finally!)

A 23 lb bullet at Mach 5 means implies about 15MJ of power in the bullet! That means it is pretty close to achieving 50% efficiency and has therefore been designed to maximize power transfer. Good to know they're doing their homework! ;)

Though they're going to have to incorporate capacitors into hull design if they keep scaling this thing up!

Last time I checked TNT had an energy of about 4MJ/kg, so 15MJ puts this at roughly the destructive power of a shell filled with 3kg of explosives. Obviously this is intended for breaching armor in a similar way to what a shaped charge does. Since they don't convert chemical to potential energy with more than maybe 20% efficiency, it's probably closer to the effect of 15kg of explosives, which I imagine would be a pretty big shell.

I found another video Link2

It's of an earlier version with less energy, but it shows the loading procedure, the control room at firing time, and a view down the barrel.

I saw another, smaller (12MJ) railgun at another naval facility, and saw a couple of interesting things. The main point that struck me was that they used a steel cover over the copper rails, and had success into that. They shot into a large vacuum chamber, and the projectile regularly pierced through 6 3/4" steel targets (could have taken one if I wanted, had a giant bucket of used targets, now wish I had...). They fired roughly 6 times a day.

Wooooot!

Btw, on the video showing the barrel from inside the facility, something burns out in the middle section, left side of the barrel LOL.

By the way, that thing must have enough power to send an M1 tank to Mars' orbit tongue

Hmmm, one has to wonder how often they have to rework/change the rails...

As a side wondering, I thought people are trying to make the supply compact - what happened to all those complicated looking compulsators and homopolar generators with inductive storage? Anyone know what density those huge capacitors have?

Oh well, whatever floats their boat :p
