Can anyone help? I'm looking for an easy way of detecting zinc from a leaking battery. I'm pretty sure I have had a battery leak that has destroyed a walkman but want to make sure that it was the battery. The nylon pull tag to remove the batteries has become hard and brittle. Any ideas on how to detect zinc without complicated processes? Thanks

assuming its a normal zinc carbon cell, the "Juice" will contain more than zinc ions. And i think Cl ions would be a lot easer to detect. Get a solution of the "Juice", mix it with some silver nitrate . if there is Cl ions, you will see white ppt. of AgCl. hope this helps?

There aren't any nice simple colour tests for Zn. If you can wash enough of it into some water you could do some tests on it. the most characteistic thing is that the oxide turns yellow on heating but becomes white again when it cools.
Are you just hoping to prove that it's the battery's fault?
