Hi,
The half bridge was mounted on a perf board, but the MOSFETS were connected through wiered several inches long.

Well this is bad but the circuit should work anyway. Make the wiring as short as possible. You do have the diodes in place right? Do you have a scope?

I meant the long connections are bad. Yes I do use the scope often. Can you post a picture of the gate waveforms?

Did you check that you mirrored the design properly?
when you're sure you laid out the circuit properly on paper, that's the next thing to check.
