A crazy idea

two magnets attract more violently than a single magnet attracts a piece of iron
therefore, a naturally magnetic projectile will do better than something like iron that must be magnet.
What kind of magnets would you suggest?
where to get them?
is a plastic barrel better than a metal barrel, or no barrel?
Also, I was looking at my local radioshack for some sort of relay or transistor that could carry 300v, couldn't find anything. suggestions? (I would realy like to move off of a spark-gap - this is what I've got... link)

People have tried this before. The problem was that the magnetic fields are normally too strong in the coil so it ends up demagnetizing the magnet. Also, magnets tend to be pretty fragile (if you want a strong field).

Yes, even those. Sometimes, it will switch the polarity of the magnets.

but it is true. i had a horible coil that i wasnt getting any strenth out of and out of curiosity i stuffed my barrel full of little rare earth magnets(the crap ones from radio shack:P) and it was so excited i still havnt found a single one of the darn things! =]
