Purely mains powered SGTC

I was wondering if anybody here has expirience with building a tesla coil using your standard 230V mains. i think you can build a seriously powerful coil.

230V is to low for a spark gap...
maybe a beefy 2 position contact/relay connected like this?

unless you synchronize the contact with the AC line frequency to have the cap connected for less than a half cycle it might work... or use rectified mains and drive the contact at whatever BPS you like

What you'd get would basically be a large air-core induction coil. It can be done but it wears out relay contacts quickly.

In that case it looks like the second inductor is the coil of a relay driving the switch. I can’t imagine that lasting too long either. It looks like a vintage relay too.
