Resonant Rise the 20KVA DRSSTC

Some of you might already know that I've been rather busy the last year. Been a sad time for me when I heard that my mother had cancer and eventually passed away. Luckily there I did have my hobby and all my friends to provide some distraction.

During that time the university asked me to build a DRSSTC for them and allowed me to spend as much time as possible at home. I'd love to show you guys the bright side of the last year. A new big coil that provided the necessary distraction.

For now I'll just post the specs, videos and pictures. Don't have enough time to do a proper writeup at the moment.

Been following on flickr since the start and looks forward to further updates on this heavy coil being pushed to the edge :)

At the moment I'm waiting for the pump and heath exchanger to arrive. The design needs to have active cooling on the primary otherwise it would exceed melting temperatures at full power. I've already managed to melt one of the primary supports.

Guess my biggest challenge is keeping all the wiring cool. 50mm^2 wire just heaths up. Need to replace them the wire with hollow tubes with oil cooling.

If that's done I'm willing to push it further. The primary current is around 2.5kA and 3kA during a groundstrike.

Looks good Dalus! Quite a bit done since I saw it on TU.

Last saturday the coil had a catasrpohic failure it set itself on fire. The busbar used to connect the capacitors in the MMC had so much current flowing that the busbar induction cooked big parts of the MMC. Luckily the coil now has a bigger and better designed MMC. Also the chokes have been rewound with copper sheet metal to decrease the heating. Now you may wonder what the coil really can do? Well here's a vid with it running on 3~ 32A 400V

That's what an audio tc should look and sound like :)
