HDD laser galvo

Found this over on LPF.

I have a few old HDD's here, seems that the old <20GB laptop drives are better for this due to the stronger magnets.

Wonder if this would work with old 1.8" Ipod drives?

It works, I've made galvos with hard drives of all sorts back in the day. The performance is really quite limited though, the cheapo Chinese closed loop galvos you can get now are FAR superior.

If you want to go from scratch, this is a good approach: Link2

Older hdds used a coil/magnet assembly that could be easily removed and used,
most of the new ones use the lid as a mount for one side of the assembly making re-use difficult.

I've never found any shortage of the older ones so far. The magnets are pretty amazing, although I've never seen magnets that come close to the old 5.25" FH SCSI A/V drives of the mid-late 90s. I've got a pair of those that I can stick on each side of my hand and they stick together pretty well.

I have found that the "top lid" variety can be reused by installing the screw back once the lid is removed.
