I was kind of expecting that sort of price but anyone got any sources for something a bit cheaper (but still safe), maybe some sort of surplus supplier?. Needs to be a conductive fabric type suit rather than chainmail and will be used with a medium sized Tesla coil. I wonder if I could persuade my mum to run something up on her knitting machine

This is what I use. Not certified and use at you own risk. Made from builders foil (mylar/fibreglass with foil). Can't tear it and runs up on sewing machine OK. Very flexible.

Thanks, I'm actually giving a bit more serious thought to the knitting machine idea, stainless wire combined with kevlar thread maybe? e.g. , and this company do a kevlar coated stainless thread. It also seems that kevlar/stainless gloves are available quite cheaply but would need careful testing. A bit more research required I think.

i bought some antistatic gloves from RS a while back, these are pretty robust. look like woven metal fibre over polyester... another thought, use stainless steel 44 gauge wire from SWC and sew this into the glove(s)..

Thanks, I also found these Stainless and kevlar only £7 a pair! I'm wary of using any fabric other than kevlar even though I'm not sure how much of an issue using other fabrics would be (it seems that some professional hot suits are stainless/kevlar).

Thanks but "Needs to be a conductive fabric type suit rather than chainmail" I already have some stainless chainmail butchers gloves that I got from an army surplus store (go figure!) but they're not suitable for what I have in mind, the suit also needs to be lightweight and full body.

Sorry, I just thought I would post that because it is only 5 lb, as opposed to typical chain mail suits that weight 26 to over 30 lb. Sparkfun sells conductive fabric in small quantities.
