Usually when they die they go short circuit. If you measure almost 0 ohms in both directions accross the C and E its dead. So if the circuit is drawing way more current then usual then the transistor is dead. If you seen my "blowing up a 2n3055" thread they can also die open circuit. The only way to know in this case is to connect it to a simple transistor tester circuit. (or look for a hole blown in the case )

Well if you can hear the circuit oscillating and the transistors are ok then the flyback arced over internally and is thus shorted. When this happens you will notice an increase in current draw from before. Output would be nil or very little if that happend. If it's not oscillating I would test your transistors or swap them with a new set then try. If that faild I would make sure the feedback winding had the right polarity and measure the resistors to see if they are showing their rated value. If it still doesn't work and assuming nothing else has been changed since it was working before, then the flyback is most likely dead.

HAH! Feedback winding polarity did the trick...Dan, you are the man! What I don't understand is how the "polarity" of an visually polarity indiscriminate wire can affect the oscillation...
