Thought that would be self explanatory, but what happens is it arcs over and
the paper wrapping catches fire. Wasn't a major inferno, cut the power and blew it out
like a candle. Haven't had a chance to put them under oil yet, have to get back on to it
before new years though.

I don't like MOT stacks for TC service because they just aren't built with the same over-voltage robustness as NSTs. The reason being that MOTs are built for 2kV rms, so the insulation's probably good to 6 or 8. An NST is built for 15kV, so the insulation's probably good to 25 or 30.

For something well controlled like the DC bus for resonant charging then fine, but to let them see the primary of a spark gap coil, even with a Terry filter in the way, is just asking for breakdown.

I am presently operating a four MOT stack based coil. I have them in vegetable oil in individual polythene boxes . I am using a 1kW ballast on the primary which normally sees service as a high pressure sodium lamp ballast and I cannot emphasise enough that if you do decide to use MOTs then some current limiting is essential here, I have had no need for vacuam pumps or issues with arcing over so far...
