Let me ask, is this your first experience with tesla coils or resonant power circuits?
If so, I highly recommend you stay away from the quad MOT. Likely they will not flash over under oil, but they can supply a massive amount of power. One mistake and your dead.

Why not start with something smaller, like a neon sign transformer?

They should be all right under oil, but they definately flashover if not under oil. They will run for a bit, but with the Rf and voltage involved in the tank circuit of a TC, they tend to catch fire.

if you put em in oil, you wanna put em under a vacuum while in oil.
why you ask me?
its to suck those bubbles/air remaining in secondary and primary out, that can cause arc overs? (correct me if i am wrong).
any way it's to play it save smile

could you explain how it can/could cause fire?

K I'll try the vacuum, could i try letting her soak for a week instead?

I hate nst and obits, the are gutless and expensive, my first coil used an obit and i obtain 3 inch steamer, plus it later died even with a safety gap, i repaired the transformer, it is now in oil,(the black epoxy resin is worth less)

Letting it soak won't do anything to get those tiny bubbles out. Though I have managed to oil a few x-ray transformers only by massaging the windings for 30 minutes to squeeze out air, that wouldn't be possible with an MOT.

You *might* be able to avoid a vacuum by vibrating it for a few days, though I'm not 100% sure that would work. Your best bet is still a vacuum. If you don't have a "real" vacuum pump, do as I do and put 2 refrigerator compressors in series. A mini fridge one followed by a regular one. It works fairly well.

Shop vac won't work, but the gas compressor may. Be prepared to lose it though. I use refrigerator compressors because you can get them for free/very cheap.
