on the HV output wires? You must connect the HV output wires to 120V and measure the voltage on the primary... Maybe it was just a typo, in which case there might be some problem with your measurement, or maybe there really is a diode on the output...

I have had a few of these. I made some modifications to the transformer before i made measurements. I took out that capacitor, as it would render it useless for most projects. I also ground the shunts way down (the bit of metal in the middle of the core between primary and secondary).
When you take out the capacitor and draw arcs, they are purple like a flyback transformer with a single transistor driver, and could not really be drawn. After the modification, the arc looked more like a typical NST or MOT arc, though scaled way down.
In the end, i got 2.5kv and around 10ma. In my opinion, that is idealistic for a tiny SGTC . I have even used a capacitor for series resonance with the secondary which was actually pretty impressive. I got 6 inch sparks with a crappy Tesla coil setup, and a sync rotary gap with a modified MO fan motor.

What you need is a High Voltage probe. Here is a fairly workable design to make a HV probe and all you really would need to spend is about $2 on resistors and a cheap DMM (you can find them as low as $6)

You could try making a Tesla coil using the onboard capacitor. Then once the capacitor burns out from that abuse, you can remove it.
As I'm sure some pedant will point out, this puts the tank capacitor across the transformer primary, which isn't the best for transformer life. The high frequency oscillations from the tank circuit feed into the transformer and could fry it. But hey, it was free. And how much worse are the TC oscillations than bug zapping transients anyway?

Great info..thanks guys!
That cap would be a pain to get out...hard to tell in the pics, but its encased in the epoxy surrounding the secondary...
And yeah, I was thinking in its native use, that thing would see a good bit of punishment. I am nearing completion on my tabletop coil (for my 5kV NST), and my next project will likely use this Xfmr to make a micro coil.
